Tonya Nelson

Classroom Teacher
Grade 5

Role
I am excited to go into my second year at ATS as a fifth grade teacher. Being a classroom teacher is fun and rewarding because we get to connect with students and families and also teach them multiple subject areas including math, language arts (reading, writing, & grammar), science, and social studies. It’s fun to learn about students – who they are in and out of school – and try to incorporate their interests into their learning each year. I’m looking forward to my second year at ATS and my 8th overall year of teaching.

Professional Background
I graduated from the College of St. Benedict in Minnesota and went back to school to attain my Graduate Teaching Licensure and Master of Science in Teaching at the College of St. Scholastica. I love learning new things, meeting new people, traveling to new places, and I hope to  share that love of learning with my students.

Personal Interests
I enjoy spending time with family and friends and playing team sports (such as Ultimate Frisbee), practicing yoga, listening to live music, shopping, and traveling around the world.

Literary Connection
I love reading personal narratives and also enjoy reading aloud to my students! Home of the Brave is one of my favorites, and it’s one book that start the fifth grade year with in during reading. I can’t wait for the new fifth graders to hear about and connect with Kek!
